The Steens Mountain Advisory Council is seeking nominations/applications for new members. There are seven open positions.
- A private landowner in the area,
- A person interested in fish or fishing,
- One state and one local environmental representative,
- A member of the Burns Paiute Tribe,
- A person who is a recreational permit holder or has commercial interests in the area,
- and a person who participates in mechanized or consumptive recreation (hunting or off-road driving).
The SMAC’s members provide representative counsel and advice to BLM regarding: (1) new and unique approaches to managing the land within the bounds of the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act; (2) cooperative programs and incentives for landscape management that meet human needs and maintain and improve the ecological and economic integrity of the area; and (3) preparation and implementation of a management plan for the CMPA. Nominations/applications are due to the Burns BLM office by November 15th, 2024. To nominate yourself or someone you know, submit a membership application and supporting letters of recommendation to the BLM Burns District Office, 28910 Hwy 20 West, Hines, Oregon.
