Are You Our Artist?

The Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge proudly sponsor the annual Youth Artist in Residence program which delivers ART and SCIENCE education to every elementary school classroom in Harney County. The Artists is, as one would expect, a critical component of this effort. Together, the artist and Carey Goss of the Malheur Refuge develop a unique lesson and art project. Then the Friends purchase any needed supplies that will help students create their own masterpieces.

Over the span of two weeks, Carey and the Artist will visit the K-5th grade classrooms of Burns and Crane in addition to rural schools in far flung corners of the county including Fields, Riley, and Drewsey. This will happen in March so that the artwork is created just in time for the annual Harney County Bird Festival. Locals and visiting festival attendees can see the students’ works hanging throughout Burns downtown businesses!

If YOU are…
…a creative who loves working with youth…
…a retired teacher that loves art…
…or a retired art teacher…
WE NEED YOU!

The 2024 program is in need of an Artist! The individual will be provided:

  • A stipend of $1,500.
  • On site housing for the duration of the program.
  • US FWS Defensive Driver Training in order to operate a Refuge vehicle for program transportation.
