
Momentum for Malheur: Looking Back, Moving Forward

As 2026 begins, our organization is positioned to accomplish even more. Our hard-working staff and dedicated board are envisioning the next round of projects and strategizing how to fund them.

My favorite part of the refuge is not what I see here, but who! I am convinced that we have the best volunteers. They continually teach me what it is like to selflessly pour yourself into something that you love with all of your heart.

Over the course of the next day and a half, 73 youth and 36 adults came from all over Harney County to experience the StarLab. The first group on Thursday was made up of students, educators, and parents from the county’s outlying rural schools such as Double O and Fields.

So, as it were, on the evening of August 22nd 50 people gathered at Sod House Ranch for the annual Malheur After Dark event featuring a night sky with a Black Moon. Attendees of all ages came from as close as the Narrows or Double O Rd and as far flung as Portland and Boise.

The issues are many. My voice feels small. But I do have a voice whereas the jackrabbits, the burrowing owls, the sagebrush – our beloved Refuge has no voice of its own.
