Malheur National Wildlife Refuge encompasses a diverse blend of High Desert habitats in the Northern Great Basin. Primarily known for the abundance of birds and other wildlife that inhabit this remote area of the west, little has been written about the people who relied upon the profusion of resources found within what is now defined as the refuge or about the influences of their actions on the land and the wildlife of the area.
Malheur’s Legacy tells the story of the remarkable people – Native Americans, homesteaders, cattle baron, conservationists, Civilian Conservation Corps recruits, and employees – whose actions changed the face of the landscape.
Malheur’s Legacy is illustrated with historic images from the past and brilliant contemporary photographs of the wildlife who call the refuge home.
