So, inescapably, Malheur is a managed landscape – not a national park where the goal is to leave nature alone as much as possible. By managing the landscape, we make it more productive for the birds and wildlife that depend upon it.
Together, the emergence counts and acoustic surveys provide an important look at bat activity around Refuge Headquarters. They help Friends of Malheur better understand how these historic buildings are being used, and they offer a foundation for future stewardship of both the buildings and the wildlife that depend on them.
Rhonda learned how to make Tule ducks from Elise, and now they are both passing their culture and knowledge to the younger generation. Rhonda said, “Tule ducks are connection to the past and were used for survival.”
